    About the stars awards

The Stars Awards is a key moment for us all, as we take the opportunity to reflect on everything we’ve done for our colleagues and customers over the past year, and to recognise the truly outstanding efforts of individuals and teams.

This year we’re taking the event online in light of the current situation. We can’t wait to see you there.

    Unite Stars Awards

    The Awards

    Safety champion award

This person’s attitude and behaviour consistently ensures our customers and our people feel safe and secure, both mentally and physically. They recognise the importance of teamwork by encouraging it in their approach to safety. This person is a natural spokesperson for their team; having the confidence to speak up if something doesn’t feel right around safety.

This inspirational individual acts with integrity, trusting and motivating others to do the same. Resilient to change and positive about the future, they have a clear sense of what’s right and strive to work in a way that’s ethical, honest and fair. This person delivers on their promises and involves others in their thinking and decision process.

Raising the bar for customers award

This person understands our customer and builds positive emotional connections to deliver an exceptional customer service. They explore new ways of thinking and have the confidence to step out of their comfort zone, whilst adopting this in their approach to customers.

    Team up award

This individual or team take the time to keep their team spirits up in difficult times and offer creative solutions and ideas on collaboration and ways of working. This person/team finds innovative and inclusive ways to engage their teammates, whilst working together with other members and departments to achieve our company goals.

    Outstanding customer care award

This person went above and beyond in their approach to students during check-in, ensuring their new home felt clean and safe upon arrival. Despite the challenges of the past year, they managed to deliver an exceptionally warm and supportive welcome.

    Innovation award

This individual or team has found ways to lead others through difficult circumstances. They’re not only passionate and committed to what they do, but their actions represent all our values here at Unite Students. This individual or team will show their vulnerabilities and acknowledge when they don’t have all the answers, proactively exploring outside opportunities to help the business, themselves and others grow.

We have a specific email address you can contact – starsawards@unitestudents.com

To protect Unite Students security it is important we ensure only Unite Students employees can take part. Register here at the Stars Awards website to gain full access and attend the Unite Stars Awards 2021!

You can nominate anyone for any award, so this could be someone from City Operations or Support Functions.  What matters is that this is someone who fits the criteria of the award and has truly gone above and beyond.

There are eight categories and employees can nominate under 7 of them.  The 8th is the CEO Award which is given by Richard Smith to an employee of his choice.

    Tuesday 20th April 2021: 19.15 – 20.30.

Due to current lockdown restrictions and the continued need for social distancing, we will be holding this year’s event online.  All employees will receive an invitation with full details.

We will be encouraging finalists to dress to impress as they’ll be on camera. But otherwise, go with what works for you!

All employees are invited. This is a celebration of all the people across the Unite family. Sit back, relax, grab a drink and enjoy the show!

    Nominations have now closed.

The award criteria are detailed on this site.

They are based on our four refreshed values, but we will provide full details of what they are when nominations launch.

Nominations will open on Wednesday 10 February and remain open for 3 weeks closing on Friday 26 February at 5pm.

The People Team will shortlist 10-12 people per award based on the award criteria.  These shortlists will then go to a judging panel (previous CEO Award winner, members of our Exec, Ops Board and Property Board and Heads of Operations) for them to select the five finalists for the live event, and the overall winner. These selections will be based on the criteria for each award and will be sent onto Richard Smith, CEO for final approval.

Yes, we will announce all nominees live on the Stars Awards site throughout the nomination window. Once shortlisting has been done, we will announce the finalists for each category.

There will be five finalists per category.

We ask that you provide as much detail as possible (within the 250 word limit) about how the person or team you are nominating has met the criteria listed for the award and why you feel they should win.

The Stars Awards event is usually an evening event in order to make it special and something we can all enjoy without needing to think about work. This time was suggested by our senior leaders, as even though this is a virtual event this year, we wanted you to be able to take out time to relax and watch the show in the comfort of your own homes or together with your teammates, if possible in line with current restrictions. This is a special event and we felt that having it in evening would make it feel less of a work event and more of a social event.
